Our client, a 31-year-old woman with a 7-year-old son, was admitted to a Brooklyn Hospital with a diagnosis of pancreatitis. Aggressive antibiotic treatment successfully treated the pancreatitis. However, she soon developed an additional infection while still in the hospital. Doctors failed to recognize the signs and symptoms of this new infection and administer antibiotics. This delay allowed the infection to advance and eventually caused a heart attack and brain damage. She passed away 6 years later, while the case was still pending. The case settled just before trial.
