Our client, a 19-year-old woman, presented to a Bronx hospital to deliver her baby. Upon admission, she suffered from severe pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure) which was not recognized or appreciated by the defendant doctors and nurses. They mistakenly believed that her slurred speech and lethargic appearance were due to drug use, instead of pre-eclampsia. They failed to recognize that the situation was an emergency requiring an immediate C-section delivery. The delay in performing the C-section caused the fetus to be oxygen deprived and born with permanent brain damage.
