A 19-year-old woman sought delivery assistance at a Bronx hospital. Upon admission, she experienced severe pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure), which the defendant doctors and nurses failed to recognize. They attributed her slurred speech and lethargic appearance to drug use rather than pre-eclampsia.
This misinterpretation led to a critical delay in identifying the emergency nature of the situation, necessitating immediate C-section delivery. Unfortunately, the delay resulted in the fetus being oxygen-deprived, leading to permanent brain damage upon birth.
